At times mysterious, at times playful, some everlasting classics, some new discoveries, these ensemble pieces are all charming and magical in their own way.

Two violins, a viola and a cello have proven to be the most highly enjoyed quartet in modern chamber music. Although this ensemble cannot compare to the immensity of a full orchestra, nor does it possess the extravagant stage performances of opera, it is fully capable of expressing a wide array of scenes and sentiments. The lavishness of royal life has already become a part of history, moving from the palace to the stage, but the messages and ideologies of these songs remain true today. The sound of steel strings accompanies the tuba, French horn, trumpet and trombone, adding a modern feel to the quintet. This modernized variation of 19th and 20th century instruments creates a bold and powerful atmosphere, whereas the woodwind quintet’s reserved appeal is a flawless combination of simplistic tunes and layered melodies. After centuries of evolution and endless exploration, the essence of these instruments has become a timeless treasure. Although the five instruments are of highly varied materials, structure, timbre and pitch, their integration is harmonious and truly captivating.

Like sighs, whispers or the tune of a bard’s poem, like the strokes of a painting or movements of a dance, the essence of quintet music is not astonishment, but rather the intricate concord of the instruments, which together may create a luxuriant sound like no other. On this compilation, prominent Chinese music producer Ye Yunchuan, along with long-time collaborators Li Dakang (engineering) and Stockfisch Studios of Germany (post-production), brings you a collection of Chinese and western pieces, showcasing these classics in a way you’ve never heard them before.

The beauty of ensemble music lingers in one’s ears, trembles in one’s heart; this compilation contains small-scale yet pleasant songs, fervent dance tunes, and timeless melodies, each piece as vivid and compelling as the last, full of life and vigor.
